Fantastic. Yep, I started my period. Three days left and it decided to arrive. RUDE. At like 11, Theresa came in and told me she was going to the store, so I was alone for like an hour. And then their phone started ringing. Which was TERRIFYING. OH MY GOD. WHAT EVEN. It was this really loud piano-y music and I freaked out, because they have a piano. But I was alone. After some investigation, I figured out that it was just the phone and went back to hiding in my room.
When Theresa came back, she asked if I wanted anything to eat and I was like “Um okay. Toast?” and she said okay and then went into her room. And didn’t come back out. And she didn’t show me where anything in her kitchen is, so I didn’t know how to make toast for myself. So I just got dressed and waited for her to come back. Which she did. HUZZAH! So then we went down to the kitchen and she started making toast while I peed. (JANKA) I had toast with nutella and we didn’t really talk that much. Then she started talking on the phone, so I just left. I packed a little.
At 2, we left to go to the bus stop. We actually had a conversation! It was in English, but it still counts! We talked about America and the school system here and a lot of the differences between here and where I live, like the lack of train.
After a while, we got off the bus in Wismar and waited for more people to show up. Lisa (no American) and M (also no American, oh! I think his name is Mathes! Still gonna call him M though, since I’m not sure) came and we met them there. Lisa said hi to me in German but I didn’t know she was talking to me, so I just kind of smiled. And then I think she said something about me not understanding her and blargh I miss people who speak English. Then we got on a bus and I didn’t talk to them because they were talking really fast and not to me, so I just looked out the window.
We got off of the bus in Neu Kloster and went to a supermarket so M could get a water. I just walk in the back when they all walk together. Works for me! Then we stood outside for a long time while M got a hot dog or whatever weird discolored thing it is they eat here and Lisa got a strawberry.
And then we walked to the lake, which was okay because I didn’t have to talk and they pretty much ignored me.
When we got to the lake, I sat down on the grass and they all got onto a blanket thing, but um. I don’t want to sit with them, so I’m like a few feet away. Then, Lisa asked me if I know Leah’s American (Emily) and I told her that I do. She asked if I’d ask if she could come to the lake or something, I think, but I can’t because I don’t have Emily’s number and her phone doesn’t work in Germany anyway. So that was awkward and language barrier and meh.
So now I’m just sitting in the grass typing this and I probably have another hour here and nothing else to do. So this is going to be a really long post, okay? Okay. You have no choice. I mean, I guess you can stop reading but then you might miss something important! TWO DAYS LEFT. My eyes keep watering because 1. It’s cold and windy and my eyes are sensitive 2. I have a cold 3. I started my period so I’m emotional anyway 4. I WANT TO GO HOME. However, I shall control my tear ducts. It’s really cold actually. Meh. I don’t know what the temperature here is, but it’s approximately cold-enough-to-have-to-wear-a-jacket-and-not-shorts. And in Indiana it’s apparently like 95 degrees. And the clothes I packed are for 95 degrees so I’ve had to IMPROVISE.
…
We left to go to the party thing at the school, which was good. EVERYONE was there. We walked back and I stood around with Kaitlin and Madi and Emily for a while. We talked about stuff that’s been happening. And stuff. Then we signed cards for Herr Milde and Frau I-don’t-know-how-to-spell-her-name. We went inside the container since, according to Janka, they’re doing renovations to the auditorium thing. I sat by Kaitlin and Herr Milde gave us some stuff from their school. Free stuff is always good stuff! Then he talked about stuff, but it was in German and I was only half listening. He said that in 2013, the Germans are coming to America in October though. Last year, they came the week before school started. So that’s cool. They’ll be here for homecoming. That’s, er… Quite an experience…
After that, we got food. There were a lot of pasta salads, which I’m not the biggest fan of, but it was okay. And Kaitlin and I went pee (;D you’re welcome janka).
After we ate, we stood around for a while talking. Shelbi kept saying “It’s okay because I got a gnome,” which was really funny. And Here G came over, so we talked to him.
After that, we left and came back home. It was around 8ish so I went to my room and facetimed my mom. And read a little. And talked to Theresa on Facebook (which we actually do a lot, even though she’s just in the other room. I can understand stuff if it’s written down!). And theeen I went to sleep. I still haven’t finished packing. Oops!

June 26, 2012

On Tuesday, Kerewin woke us up. Meh. I thought we were going to be able to sleep in. We got dressed (barely) and had breakfast of… Once again, bread. Then Kerewin’s dad drove us to a bus stop in Neu Kloster. We got on a bus and SO DID JENNA. WOOP. So we talked to her the whole way to Wismar about the stuff she’d been doing and blahblahblah. Then at Wismar, we got on a train to Schwerin. There was a group of old people in front of us speaking Dutch or something. One of them ran into Kaitlin and she said “Sorry! Endschuldigung! Ah, you don’t speak that either!” It was funny. And Jenna was still there. Oh! And so was M! Whose name I still don’t know!
So theeeeen, we went to a mall. We had Asian food again, but it was good.
After that, we went shopping with Kerewin. In one store, there was a whole section of clothes that had the american flag on them. LIES. YOU’RE NOT AMERICAN. We didn’t really buy anything, except socks! And then we got the pens that EVERYONE here has.
After that, we got on a train to Wismar again. And Kaitlin slept. And I texted my mommy.
After that, we went to a bus station and sat there for a long time not doing anything. Our bus came after a long time and Theresa and I left. When we got back to her house, I took a nap. Then we went to dinner. I had a salad that had cucumbers on it. Ick. I sat there for a long time after I was done because I didn’t know if I could just leave. Eventually, I just thought “YOLO” and left. I went back to my room and facetimed my dad, my mom, and then Madi. And then I went to sleep.
I had a really bad day because we’re SO CLOSE to leaving, but it’s still a long time. So I was really whiny and stuff, but I just want to go home. Meh. Three days.

June 25, 2012

On Monday, Kaitlin and I woke up around 10:30, I think. Kaitlin was hungry, so she kind of raided the kitchen. We got ready and Kerewin’s dad picked us up at noon. Apparently ‘the f word’ isn’t that bad to say here. There were five of us and only room in his car for four, so he went “Oh f*ck.” (CENSORING FOR 13 YEAR OLDS AND GRANDMAS.)
Anyway, we all managed to fit in and we went to the grocery store. Kaitlin and I picked out some stuff as souvenirs, but when we went to pay, her card didn’t work. Apparently the store didn’t accept debit or something, I don’t know what was wrong. But we’d left all of our other money in the car, so Kerewin’s dad had to pay for us. It was only like €10, but I couldn’t tell if he was mad or not.
Then we left and went to Kerewin’s house. We had lunch, which was uh… Salami and cheese on bread. It was good. Then Kaitlin and I went to her room and played cards and watched the turtle and flipped through an Indianapolis book and blahblahblah. At that point, we were really bored, so we went up to the scary loft with Monopoly, which was Wismar themed. I won. After that, we took a nap because we were really tired. When we woke up, we went downstairs to eat pizza for dinner.
Then, we went to Connie’s house for Shelbi’s birthday party thing. Where we had more to eat. Oops. It’s all good though, because Janka and Shelbi were there! We talked a lot and Ryan built a tower out of bottles and it was ~ jolly good fun~ Then one of the Germans suggested we play a gigantic game of Telephone, which was pretty fun. (It got changed to not pg-13 things though! Eep!) Then uh… We played that game where someone writes a name on a post it note and puts it on your head and you have to guess it. Davis had Anne Frank. OH MEINE GUTE. I had Batman. After that, a bunch of people left, but Shelbi, Kaitlin, and I talked about stuff. Specifically, people we didn’t like. DRAMA. After a while, her host mom and Connie came over, so we talked to them too. I actually understood a lot of what her mom was saying! It was in both German and English. About horses or something.
I think we left at midnight and went back to Kerewin’s house. Kaitlin and I went right to sleep!

June 24, 2012

On Sunday, I woke up around 10 and got on a bus to Wismar. Theresa asked me if I normally listen to music while on the bus. Awkward. I’d left my headphone earphone what things at her house, so I just told her I didn’t want to.
After a while, we pulled up in front of the stop in Wismar and Kaitlin and Kerewin were there! I sat next to Kaitlin and we talked about what we’d done since we saw each other on Friday. After a really long time, we got on a bus to go to the zoo. It rained. We got there finally and walked to the entrance, where we met with their friend who’s name I can’t remember. We’ll just call him M. Anyway, I think Theresa asked us if we still wanted to go to the zoo or if we wanted to go to McDonald’s since it was raining. I think Kaitlin got confused, so she started rambling about how all Americans love McDonald’s and blahblahblah other stuff, but M laughed.
Eventually, I guess we decided on McDonald’s so we got on another bus and backtracked to Wismar to go to McDonald’s. There are MANY less here than America. At McDonald’s, Theresa yelled at Kaitlin because she was going to order in English. Meep. Whatever. Theresa ended up ordering mine, I guess. Kaitlin and I got our own table so we could talk without them listening in/yelling at us for speaking English. She was in kind of a bad mood. This thing has been happening to me recently where I get hungry, the feeling goes away, I eat, and then I feel like I’m going to throw up. Probably because I really only eat every other day. And only one meal on days I do eat. Oops! After Kaitlin and I finished eating, we got bubble tea! I had it in Berlin too and didn’t like it. The McDonald’s one was a little better but still tasted like soap.
After that, we left. And went home to Theresa’s house. So. We didn’t end up going to the zoo. D: At Theresa’s house, Kaitlin and I kind of hid in my room until we got hungry. Then there was some drama and not-fun-times, but we somehow ended up in the kitchen! We had spaghetti with um. Sausage and tomato sauce? It was good. Then we had spaghettieis, but it kind of sucked because it wasn’t very spaghettieis-y. And frozen.
After that, we went up to my room and watched 13 Going On 30 and Hairspray. Then we named the moth that lives in my room Muhammad. Then we went to sleep!

This Muhammad the Moth. And it only went until 10. When we got there, we went straight to the auditorium thing for an awards ceremony. At least, I think that’s what it was. They didn’t translate it, so I’m not sure. Kerewin (Kaitlin’s) and Lisa (Janka’s) won something though!
After that, Kaitlin and I went to our hosts’ classroom. Kyle was there too. The three of us sat in the front corner while the teacher talked. After a while, Kaitlin got bored and went to get cards. We played quietly until the teacher looked over at us and asked us (in German) if we were playing an American or a German game. We said American and the girl next to us showed the teacher a nickel we’d found. Anyway… Then they got released for a break, but Kaitlin and I stayed in the room because we didn’t know where else to go. It was really quiet until a loud bang went off. We both thought we’d gotten shot. It turns out that some kid outside was just setting off fireworks.
Then everyone came back in and the teacher said something again and then they were dismissed to leave! We walked outside and Kaitlin and Kerewin left. I talked to Madi for a while until I looked over and noticed that Theresa had just left… Alright then. Apparently the plan was for me to go to Leah’s house, but I hadn’t known that! Anyway, then the five of us (Leah, Emily, Anne-Marie, Madi, and I) walked to Leah’s house. We sat on the couch awkwardly for a while and flipped through and Indianapolis book until we decided to go to the supermarket. I got two bags of candy for Erin. Well, they’re for the whole family but let’s be honest. Who’s going to be eating them all?
We walked back to Leah’s house and sat on a trampoline while we waited for lunch to be ready. We started talking about Spongebob Squarepants. Apparently here, he’s called Spongebob Spongepants (Spongepants is in German though). Then, Anne-Marie and Leah started singing the opening song, which was funny because it was German. Then we had lunch, which was pretty good.
After lunch, we went back to the lake from the day before. The three of us just sat in the grass and listened to music. Some Germies started playing soccer and guess which one of got hit in the head with the ball? That’s right me.
Around 1, we walked back to the school and got on our buses. Mine took over an hour to get home, but Theresa showed me Herr Milde’s house. I kept almost falling asleep, but it’s okay because she said she did too.
When we got home, I took a nap, then wrote some for my blog because I was WAY behind. Then we had dinner and I went to Theresa’s room for the soccer game. Germany won against Greece 4:1!
After that, I went back to my room and FaceTimed my mom, then went to sleep. Yep!

Photo

June 21, 2012

On Thursday, we had school again… When we got there, we went to a room with the 11th graders, where they had an obstacle course that you were supposed to do blind folded. Most people in our group did it, but not me! I couldn’t have done it with my eyes open!
After that, we followed Jenna’s host sister to her room and watched as they played weird games. In the first one, we made a circle around one girl and pushed her back and forth, keeping her from falling over. It’s hard to explain, but it’s pretty much as weird as it sounds. After that, we sat back down and didn’t participate in any more games. In one, they randomly started counting around the room. I’m not sure why. There were some other ones too, but it wasn’t very interesting. At 10, the Americans left to go to the lake by the school. We got paddle boats and went out into the water! My paddle boat had Madi, Emily, and Kaitlin. We took turns pedaling and sang patriotic songs really loudly. We miss America. We also raced the boys who were in a canoe and Kaitlin picked sticks out of the water. It was fun.
We went back in after like an hour and sat around in the grass for a long time. Kaitlin found a dead crawdad and had a funeral for it. We also played cards. I was super tired! At almost 1, we went back to the school because class had let out. A few of the Germans decided to go back to the lake because it was really pretty outside. So… Madi, Kaitlin, and I got the boat again. We went swimming!
After like an hour, we went back to where all the Germans were before going back to the school. We waited for the buses. I got on a bus with a bunch of Germans and Austin (American). They were making plans to do something! Theresa and I had to leave though, because her mom was already on the way to get us. We went back home and I took a small nap. Then Theresa came in and asked if I wanted to go hang out with those people I didn’t know. I said no, because I was so tired. Then, uh… She asked if she could go without me. So she did. That was awkward, but I just hid in my room for the rest of the day.
I also didn’t really eat anything. Meh. Bad day.

June 20, 2012

On Wednesday, we woke up a bit earlier, got dressed, ate breakfast, blahblahblah. After that, we went back to our rooms to pack up our stuff. We put our bags in a room and locked them up.
Then we left to go to a museum called The Story of Berlin. We got there like 45 minutes earlier, so we all sat on the ground in front of it. A few people played Janka’s monster game, Kaitlin and Emily slept, and I looked through the pictures on my camera. I will upload them on Saturday probably after we get back! With captions! Finally, it opened and we went pee. The paper towels had ads on them! It was kind of interesting, so I took a picture. Then we went back out and our tour guide told us that we were going to tour a bomb shelter first. We went back outside and down a bunch of stairs until we got to a little room. It was a bit hard to understand the tour guide, as his accent was… I don’t even know. Someone described it as “ghetto German,” but I all I know is that I had to work to understand him. The bomb shelter was really cool and also TERRIFYING. It was really dark except for blue lights, which was really creepy. And the walls or pipes or something kept making strange noises. The bomb shelter was for the Cold War, I think, and could hold around 3,500 people. Which is significantly less than Berlin’s population, which I think is over 3 million. The bomb shelter is basically a large room with a bunch of bunks and a few rooms off to the sides. It was designed to last 2 weeks, and during those two weeks the only thing you were allowed to do was lay in your bunk and sleep. There were bathrooms and food too, of course, but barely worth it. The bathroom didn’t have any mirrors so that no one would go crazy and use it as a weapon. And they were really dirty too, so disease spread quickly. And it was HOT. Or it would have been, if there were 3,500 of us in there. But there wasn’t. We toured the bomb shelter for a while until we stopped and our tour guide played an audio track of what I think was a bomb warning by some guy, alarms, and then the sound of bombs going off, so that would be what they heard in the shelter all the time. Scary!
After that, we went back upstairs and toured the museum. I liked it a lot! Much better than the Potsdam one! I didn’t notice, but Janka said that the museum’s floor gradually went up as Germany progressed through time, reaching it’s high point in the 1920’s. Then you went down several flights of stairs during the Hitler regime. I thought that was super cool! Whoever came up with that is brilliant.
After the tour, we went back somewhere, I forget where, and split into groups. Somehow, I ended back up with the people from Monday. Madi and Emily needed to buy souvenirs still, so we went and did that. However, while they were checking out, the Germans just walked off. Not wanting to get lost and seeing another group of Germans, Kaitlin and I ran after our group. Apparently the second group left too, so um. Madi, Janka, and Emily were lost. Kaitlin and I freaked out, calling each of them a few times, but their phones were turned off. The Germans we were with didn’t even care, they just sat and ate some weird food. Kaitlin got really mad, so we left them and went to the train station, thinking that’s where they might be. They weren’t there. A gigantic group of Germans was there though, including Theresa and Kerewin, so we told them what happened. They were more worried than the people in our group. Kaitlin and I got lunch while T&K tried to figure out what to do, I think. We came back and so did the teachers, as well as everyone EXCEPT Madi, Janka, and Emily. Eventually the teachers found them at a strawberry shop, which is where we had agreed to meet. So nobody died! Kaitlin and I were shaking in nervousness, but Madi was just casually buying strawberries. Alright then.
After that, we walked to a boat tour where Kaitlin REALLY had to pee. She said she was going to explode! It was really funny, watching her dance around. We ate Madi’s strawberries while we waited and finished the whole bag. Heh. Then we got on the boat. We sat inside instead of on the top floor, since it was raining. There was a pre-recorded tour thing playing, but we couldn’t hear it and I think it was in German anyway. So we just used the boat ride to look outside and take a break. And Kaitlin played with a tampon. After that, we went back to get our stuff and took a bus ride to the train station. We took another break and got Burger King. Again. I put mine in my bag because I wasn’t hungry.
Then we all went up to the train platform and stood around. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw two trains that looked like they were going to crash. So I pointed and screamed. Evidently, I was a little tired. It was okay though, because it was really funny and not very many people heard.
Then the train came and we got on. It was SUPER crowded. This one lady was taking up two whole extra seats with… Cat crates! With cats in them! It was extremely strange… Thankfully, we were in the less crowded train compartment. The one next to us had a guy with a bike! After like half an hour, we all got seats around each other. We talked and listened to music and had fun. Kaitlin fell asleep!
When we got back to the train station, both of Theresa’s parents were there to pick us up. We got in their car and she talked to them, while I tried not to fall asleep. I think at one point, she complained about all the tours being in English… Um…
When we got home, I unpacked, showered, and then went to sleep.
Overall, Berlin was a good experience! I just wish we’d gotten to do more. I thought that we were going to visit a concentration camp, but we never did… And that was one of the main things I was looking forward to… So that was disappointing. We didn’t go to two other touristy things either, so I was kind of upset. Oh well, I suppose. Maybe I’ll come back at some point.

June 19, 2012

On Tuesday, we woke up at 7ish and got ready to go. I wore red shorts! We had breakfast, which wasn’t very good, but eh. It was free!
At 8:30, I think, we left to go to Potsdam. We went to some palace castle thing where someone named Fredrick might have lived. I don’t know, I wasn’t really listening. The tour guide showed us where he was buried though! Apparently he hadn’t wanted to be buried next to his wife. Instead… Next to his dogs. PRIORITIES. There were potatoes on his grave. The castle palace thing was really pretty, but once again all my pictures are on a camera. I think Janka has pictures if you’re impatient. We walked around the grounds of the castle palace thing and got to The Chinese House, which is a building with gold “Chinese” people statues. The people looked European, they just had squinty eyes. They even dressed European. I took lots of pictures of them!
After that, we went back to the train station for lunch. I bought my sister a present and an American flag scarf for myself. I like it! I had a pretzel for lunch and most people had Chinese food again. After that, we went to the building where they had the Potsdam Conference with The Big Three. It was really cool, but the tour was kind of boring and dragged on a lot. The best part was when Sheebles asked if Winston Churchill was an American president. Umm… No. ;D
After the tour, we went back to the train station. There was some drama, but it got all sorted out. Madi, Kaitlin, and I grouped up with Theresa and Kerewin. We went to a tourist shop and I spent €70. Oops. OH WELL.
After that, we got on a subway thing that might have been calle an S-Bahn and went to Alexanderplatz. Kaitlin, Madi, and I decided that we wanted to see a movie, so we got tickets to see Dark Shadows. Then we walked back and got dinner. Madi had something German, but Kaitlin and I had KFC. Can’t be tamed! Then we tried bubble tea, which um. Was not fun. There was also a really really really really really drunk guy. OH NEIN.
After that, the three of us went to a movie and Theresa and Kerewin went shopping. But don’t tell, shhhhh. The movie was um… A different experience. It was in German, but we understood it pretty well. The movie plot itself wasn’t very good though.
After the movie ended, we got back on the subway thing and met up with a bunch of other people from our group. We walked home with them and I took a shower then slept. THE END.

June 18, 2012

On Monday, I woke up and got all my stuff together to go to Berlin. It was kind of awkward because I didn’t know what to do and I don’t think my family knew what time to be there. Er.. Anyway! We got there successfully! Theresa’s mom drove us to the train station with our stuff. Thankfully, Jenna was near us when we parked, so I walked in with her. We stood around for a little while until everyone else came over. I forget what happened after that, but eventually we ended up on the train. I think ours was the first stop, so nobody was really on. Most of the American girls sat around each other. There were eight seats facing each other, so those were the ones we sat in. The train ride was like 3 hours long and VERY eventful. Shelbi ate an entire banana at once, Kaitlin kissed every picture of Niall in a One Direction magazine, and we all stated at another group of people our age on the train.
After we got to Berlin, we walked around the train station for a half an hour-ish. We got Chinese food, which was really weird. I didn’t really like it and none of us ate much of it. As we were leaving, some lady walked up to us and asked if we spoke English and handed us a piece of paper to read. All of the Germies freaked out because apparently that’s how people pickpocket you. One chick gives you the paper and asks you to read it while the other goes behind you and steals stuff of your bag. SO NOW YOU KNOW.
We walked out of the train station and started our long walk to the youth hostel, which is like a hotel mostly for teenagers. Four to a room. The walk was SUPER long and we were all carrying our bags and it was not fun. Once we got there, we sat around for a long time. I ended up in a room with Jenna, Juliane, Shelbi, and Kaitlin. Since there were 5 of us, we had to use the trundle bed (?). It was okay though, I guess. After we got all situated, we left to go to the parliament building, which was really cool. There was a wall that a bunch of drunk Russians wrote on and they have it preserved. I took pictures in Berlin, but they’re mostly on my camera, so I can’t put them up until I get home. ANYWAY. The parliament building was cool and they have purple chairs. The tour was in English, so we actually understood it. We went up to the roof and took a bunch of pictures before it started to rain. We went into this viewing dome thingy to wait it out before we had free time. I was in a group with uh… Juliane, Lisa, Lisa, Janka, Shelbi, Madi, Kaitlin, Jenna, Emily… That might be it. We walked for a long time until we got to an Australian restaurant. They sold kangaroo and crocodile! We didn’t have that though, we had cheeseburgers. It was good.
After that, we thought the Germans were leading us to another fun place, but instead they took us back to the hostel because they were tired. It really sucked because we were there two hours earlier than we needed to be. The teachers weren’t even there yet! But we didn’t really have a choice, so we just stayed. I showered and talked to Shelbi and Kaitlin and then went to sleep. The end!

We were all a bit hyper actually.

We were all a bit hyper actually.

Kaitlin was sleepy ;D She woke up after this though and was SO...

Kaitlin was sleepy ;D She woke up after this though and was SO HYPER.
